: When can the government restrict speech?
Since there seems to be much confusion over what the First Amendment entails on Tumblr, I thought I’d post a brief guide from an old introductory ConLaw textbook to clear things up a bit. Here are a few general categories of speech that the Supreme Court has determined the…
When we are indoctrinated from birth, because even when we are in utero we hear and record sort of, in tradition and common myth we learn that the US Constitution is the height of civilization and human freedom. But it is not. It is one of the greatest documents penned, in league with the Magna Carte. But once our Constitution was ratified in 1787, it was violated within two years. It has been pointed out that in times of war and civil unrest, our rights have been set aside. It is true. What we have to understand is that government and society have one major duty. To control the population, whether it is 500 or 5Billion. The best control is contentment, happiness, and complacency. Rome had it right. Bread and Circuses. Feed and entertain the masses and they will stay in their place. It’s no different now than 2000 years ago or 10,000. Social order means the many cooperate.
This isn’t an evil, just what it is. But it does foster inequities. And if the society and culture is to grow and evolve, we must over come this. We must change. But people can’t because we are also taught to be afraid. Machiavelli may have written the Prince, but the concept is as old as Man. Fear of the wild beasts, the night, demons, each other…fear. Fear of displacement, loss, the unknown, pain, violence, death, God, and being different. We are all told there are beasts out there who want to get us. Anonymously… because they hate us. There are people out in our neighborhoods who want to hurt us because they are different from us. And the truth of it is, there are! It is a truth that substantiates all the fear we are told about. Because life is full of fear and violence. The more order we have the more stark it is. Better this than a life over burdened with violence and pain, and fear. Without government and society we would be helpless. Bull Shit. We aren’t helpless. We accept ourselves as helpless before God, Country and Walmart.
